The situation in Turkey has already gotten worse.

The official death toll for the earthquake is now over 11,000 people, there’s still barely any emergency services in some parts of the country, and Erdogan’s telling his subjects that everything they’re experiencing is all part of God’s plan.

Twitter in Turkey is being shut down, and now Twitter and basically most other social media is being made inaccessible. This is a huge problem not just because it restricts people from speaking out against Erdogan and his government but also because social media, especially Twitter, is a major platform people to spread info about the earthquake, find out about victims, and spread donation links. A lot of emergency aid is getting there through Twitter links, even Greece used Twitter to contact the injured. But of course, Erdogan can’t have all that dissent also spreading.

Also, the only way Turkish people can access Twitter right now is through a VPN, but now VPNs are illegal there and Erdogan was out there saying that he will arrest anyone using a VPN. People living in Turkey are having their accounts blocked and suspended, and even their credit cards are blocked from Twitter. Right now I’m not expecting Elon Musk to do anything useful about that.

Turkey still needs all the help it can get. And most of all it needs Erdogan out of power - dragged out, if need be.

When I was your age, I saw something real bad happen to my mum and I was scared too. I didn’t feel like talking, just like you. But see, my mum, I know she wanted me to be brave. I think about that every day. And I do my best to be brave. And maybe your dad wants you to be brave too.
